Digesting your Emotions
Have you ever wondered why there is so many autoimmune diseases and why they are becoming increasingly common ? I believe its because in this day and age people are suppressing their emotions in their bodies and its making them sick . Nowadays, in the hustle culture of pushing through and getting on with things, our bodies are not having enough chance to catch up with their emotions. And lots of people are getting ill because of it . It is so much easier to dissociate now with the rise in social media and the COVID effect ( people are for more used to dealing with things are their own and are less likely to reach out and ask for help).
In a bid to cope with all of our complex emotions, we try to stuff it down deep inside us and cover up the void with easy dopamine fixes - online shopping, drama in relationships, doom scrolling ( this was my go to ) amongst other quick fixes, that will distract and feel good in the moment but take you away from the most important thing - feeling your emotions.
The answer to this is so simple yet so difficult to do - its about after a difficult moment , whether that be a stressful phone call or a difficult morning with your teenager - is to sit with this emotion, name it ( this helps to process the emotion, you might want to purchase a wheel of emotions to help with this ) Allow yourself to feel the frustration, upset or whatever you might be feeling - do not block the emotion or cover it up with something else. Put on some calming music if this helps you, and sit with this feeling, cry if you need to , properly digest your emotions.
Then, once you have felt your emotions, you will be able to move forward in a way that fully supports your body and mind. I have been doing this recently and I feel so much better for it , although it will feel strange at first to let the feelings come to the surface. Give this a try! I feel a lot more aware of my emotions and it is easier to give myself what I need to help me.
Much love,
Andrea
